Day 6: July 13, 2025
VBT trip day 2
Today was our first full day of riding after a night on the river and the cruise experience. The ship would be a fascinating social setting for research.
Here's the breakfast scene.
We are right at the waterline. Actually, a little below.
We docked somewhere in Austria. The Austrians do a better job of decorating than the Germans although to be fair, the plaee where we were docked last night was not a proper dock.
Today's route was an out-and-back along a multi-use trail. Apparently, someone put it together at the last minute because of the change in the start location. Last minute or not, it was a nice route.
On the way, we stopped at a little museum about fishing on the Danube. It seemed like a little mom and pop operation and it was small, but they had nicely organized displays of old fishing boats and gear. There was no admission fee although perhaps VBT pays them ahead of time to stop there and use their bathrooms.
The owners or managers seemed really glad to see us. Their English wasn't very good, but they were super friendly.
The trail was very popular with cyclists of all types. There were a lot of bikpackers and cyclists with local tour groups. There were also a lot of long and short term vacationers living on the trail in little parks, like trailer parks. One of them had this out building.
The chimney for the wood burner suggests it was a sauna.
In addition, there were plenty of food places, some big, some small.
This one had charging for ebikes.
Here are the data from the ride: https://www.strava.com/dashboard?feed_type=my_activity
42 miles, virtually flat. We got in some good pacelining.
This was in the afternoon on the way back, but not an example of pacelining, since it is more important not to run into the guy in front of you than to try to take a picture.
The non-VBTers had the option of a day trip to a nearby village. It required four busses! When they came back, the WiFi slowed down noticeably.
