preparing for the trip

This blog is a short description of travels with my bike bros. This year, our little posse includes Mike Reagan, Walter Putter, and Marty Canavan. 

I have been doing trips since 2013, and Mike Reagan has been a constant travel companion. Walter Putter has been my roommate for many of these trips, and Marty Canavan will be joining us this year for the first time since 2013. 

I usually write a post for each day that we are on the road, July 8-20, but wifi may be spotty as I will explain below.

For 2025, we decided to do something a little different. We usually use Vermont Bicycle Tours (hereafter VBT), and this year's trip involves a river boat. Here's the VBT webpage describing the tour:

If you want the short version, there are three parts.

  1. We fly into Prague where we spend three days on our pre-trip. 
  2. We board a river boat on the German side of the river (the company is Emerald Star Ships https://www.emeraldcruises.com/river/river-experience/ship-experience/our-ships-europe) where we spend the next week. The boat cruises down the Danube and we get off during the day to ride bikes.
  3. We end up in Budapest and then fly home.
Since we will be on the water, we may or may not be close to a cell tower on shore which will determine our ability to use our phones. We'll see how the ship manages their wifi.

We arrived in Prague at about 8:00am local time (3:00am according to our bodies)! We got off the plane with various levels of sleep deprivation. I was sitting in steerage, so I exited out the butt to a shuttle bus. It was cloudy, windy, and in the 60s which felt cold compared to the high 80s we left behind.  We got through customs without incident and we were met by a woman with a VBT on her iPad. Multiple individuals work for VBT to cover local logistics. Her job was simply to meet us and get us onto a vehicle to take us to our hotel. This is one advantage of booking the pre-trip, otherwise we would have to get ourselves to a hotel.  The driver took us on winding secondary roads to the center city and to our small boutique hotel. Day 1: July 8, 2025

 On the road! We left Syracuse without incident, although three of us got pulled out of the TSA line. Fortunately, Walter was not subjected to a full body search this time. We had almost six hours to kill before our flight to Prague so Mike took us to the Delta Lounge. He had to bribe the person at the desk to get us in. A nice spread, but wait until you see the breakfast buffet in the European hotels! I liked the trash robot.  Red Chili used to have one that brought food to your table, but then a wait person had to take it off the tray and put it on the table! Lounge Lizards - a couple of wild a crazy guys. The next time you hear from us, we will be in Prague!
